The Raven in Spring

The raven has always known where stories are buried.

It waits on church roofs, chimney pots, gallows trees, and garden walls, watching the living hurry past the places they would rather forget. Some call it an omen. Some call it a thief. Some say it only comes where death has already set its hand upon the door.

But the raven does not invent darkness.

It remembers it.
